Sustainable Beauty Brands We Love

Here at Lisse, we make eco-friendly shave products like reusable safety razors and vegan skincare products that support a smoother shave without harming our environment. As a company, we are always on the lookout for other sustainable beauty brands that share our values. Whether it’s an investment in high-quality natural ingredients, giving back to meaningful causes, or eco-friendly alternatives to conventional beauty, here are five other beauty and self-care brands we look up to, and the stories behind them.

Helena Lane Organic Skincare

Helena’s journey into natural products and fascination with how our skin works began due to her own battle with chronic eczema in her early 20’s. A swap to natural, plant based skincare was a major factor in healing her skin, which eventually led to her using her knowledge and experience to develop her own skincare range.

It is Helena’s belief that the skincare industry is becoming unnecessarily complicated with long lists of refined and processed ingredients, as companies mass produce products and compromise on quality. In contrast, Helena Lane organic skincare focuses on simplicity, using only a few ingredients, all of which are unrefined, unprocessed, natural and certified organic.

Not sure where to start in your organic skincare journey? We love Helena Lane’s Glow Tinted Moisturizer, an illuminating face cream that creates a fresh and dewy natural look with mica and iron oxide, and the Lavender and Lime Cleanser, a natural balm which helps unblock pores and regulate sebum production while softening the skin.

For every order placed online, Helena Lane Skincare will plant one tree through the non-profit organization One Tree Planted to help fight climate change.

Sḵwálwen Botanicals

Sḵwálwen Botanicals is a natural beauty line inspired by Indigenous plant knowledge. Founder Leigh Joseph is of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) First Nation, and her earliest memories of food and culture came from childhood: drinking fresh blackberry juice with every meal, picking fresh carrots, beets, and peas from her uncle's garden, and watching her family smoke and prepare fresh salmon on their property.

As an adult, Leigh maintains her connection to food, culture and community by incorporating Indigenous plants into her contemporary, natural skincare line, which utilizes respectfully harvested botanicals, organic oils, nourishing plant-derived butters and steam distilled essential oils in their formulations.

ILIA Beauty

A leader in the clean beauty space, ILIA creates beauty products with skincare benefits. Hydrating ingredients which you typically only find in skincare products -- like hyaluronic acid, shea butter, aloe leaf or jojoba seed oil -- have made their way into ILIA’s “skincare-powered makeup” formulations. Their Balmy Gloss Tinted Lip Oil, for example, contains hyaluronic acid to keep your lips moisturized, while their award-winning Limitless Lash Mascara is blended with shea butter and keratin to help boost and enhance your lashes.

Many of ILIA’s products are multi-use, designed for easy application on-the-go, like their creamy Multi-Stick that can be used on lips and cheeks, or a tinted serum that also has SPF 40 sun protection. Their potent formulas are designed with active levels of skincare ingredients that shield skin from environmental stressors.

Yellow Beauty

Yellow Beauty is a boutique skincare line that highlights turmeric as its star ingredient, a natural root with anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-oxidant properties that’s been a staple spice for 6,000 years in South and South-East Asia.

Jaz Fenton and Jamil Bhuya started Yellow Beauty based on Jamil's experience attending the Holud ceremony in Bangladesh. It was there that he was introduced to the rich history of turmeric-based skincare through his family. Knowing Jaz struggled with redness and breakouts, they decided to put what he learned into practice.

Yellow in colour, turmeric contains curcumin, a powerful antioxidant that helps reduce the appearance of breakouts, while calming conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Turmeric also works to naturally reduce melanin production, naturally helping fade dark spots and acne scars.

Nala Natural Deodorant

Founded by mother-and-daughter duo Radmila Juristovski-Bosnic and Ada Juristovski, Nala Natural Deodorants came to be after the founders suffered a personal family loss to cancer.

Deep loss led to deeper inquiry, and the two women were inspired to create a product that’d make their late-husband and father proud; a renewed focus on creating non-carcinogenic options for everyday products, that don’t compromise on efficacy.
